How to measure shoulder width

For a conventional set-in-sleeve garment, measure shoulder width across the upper back from one shoulder-seam endpoint to the other with the garment flat. Do not compare that number with a body-shoulder measurement or with dropped/raglan constructions as if they used the same landmark.

Direct answerLay the garment flat with the back facing up, find the shoulder seam endpoint on each side, and measure straight across between those endpoints without stretching. If the garment has dropped shoulders, raglan sleeves or no clear shoulder seam, the standard seam-to-seam method may not be directly comparable to a conventional shirt.
Measurement comparison

Shoulder-width comparison

Compare only like-for-like landmarks. A small numerical difference is meaningless if the two measurements start from different points.

Seller question

Could you please measure the garment shoulder width using a straight, repeatable landmark and tell me exactly where the tape starts and ends? Please do not substitute the tagged size.

Measurement consistency matters

A number is only useful when you know whether it is a body circumference, a flat garment width, or a linear finished-garment measurement.

What matters most
  • Garment shoulder width and body shoulder breadth are different measurements.
  • Use seam endpoint to seam endpoint for conventional set-in shoulders.
  • Dropped shoulder and raglan garments need construction-aware comparison.
  • Compare with the same garment type and same measurement method.
  • Shoulder differences can change sleeve position even when chest width matches.

Step-by-step method

  1. 1

Lay the garment flat with the back panel smooth and shoulders in their natural position.

  2. 2

Identify the outer endpoint of each shoulder seam where it meets the sleeve/armhole.

  3. 3

Place the tape straight across the upper back from endpoint to endpoint.

  4. 4

Do not follow the curved neckline or sleeve seam.

  5. 5

Record the construction type if the shoulder is dropped, raglan or otherwise unconventional.

  6. 6

Compare the result with a known-good garment measured using the same construction and landmarks.

Worked example

Your favorite set-in-sleeve shirt is 18.0 in shoulder seam to seam. A listing is 18.6 in with the same construction. The candidate is 0.6 in wider through the shoulder line; check sleeve length next because the sleeve may start farther outward.

Common mistakes that change the answer

  • Measuring across your body and comparing it directly with a finished garment.
  • Including sleeve fabric beyond the shoulder seam.
  • Measuring a dropped-shoulder garment as if its seam marks the anatomical shoulder.
  • Pulling the upper back taut before measuring.
  • Comparing shoulder numbers taken from different endpoints.

When the related tool helps

Use the calculator after you have confirmed the measurement method or product-specific chart. Arithmetic can be exact while the fit or care decision still depends on construction, brand rules or your personal reference garment.
